Playground

Located in the heart of the park, the playground is a centerpiece for visitors of the park reserve. Designed

with kids in mind, the playground invites youngsters to stretch, slide, hang and hold-on. Despite its size and

height, most of the play elements are accessible by wheelchair.

Swimming Beach

As it has done for many years prior, the clean and clear waters of Big Marine Lake beckons people to splash,

swim, and cool-off during the sweltering summer months. The gentle grade of the lake makes this beach

great for families.

Boat Launch

Big Marine Lake is an outstanding fishery, with healthy populations of bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass,

northern pike, and walleye. The wind-protected north-ern bay provides excellent waterskiing conditions,

while the varied lake structure provides great habitat for fish and other aquatic animals.

The park reserve is located in northern

Washington County. The entrance is lo-cated on Manning Trail (County Road 15).

just north of 170th St. N. in May Township.

Park: 7:00 a.m. until 1/2 hour after sunset.

Beach: Memorial Weekend through July 31, 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.

August 1 through Labor Day, 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Boat Launch

6:00 a.m. until 1/2 hour after sunset Parking for vehicles w/ trailers allowed in desig-

nated lots only.

Fees A Washington County vehicle permit is required

on all motorized vehicles. Please purchase this at the park's contact station or the honor box near the

park entrance. Annual vehicle permits are valid for a full year from the date of purchase. The

Washington County Park vehicle permit also provides free admittance to Anoka and Carver

County Parks.

Park Rules For the protection of park resources and facilities,

and for the enjoyment of all visitors, please observe all regulations posted throughout the park:

♦ Dogs are only allowed in parking lots or hiking trails and must be leashed.

♦ Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages, including 3.2 beer, is prohibited.

♦ Please refrain from smoking at the beach.

♦ All flotation devices including water wings, air mattresses and noodles are not allowed.

♦ Coast Guard approved life jackets are allowed in the PFD roped area.

♦ Glass containers are not permitted in the beach area.

Swim Groups

Organized swimming groups must obtain prior approval from the Parks Division at 651-430-8200

Picnic Area

Picnic tables and charcoal grills are available throughout the park.

Washington County proudly welcomes you to Big

Marine Park Reserve. The park opened in 2008 & includes a boat launch, swimming beach, picnic

areas, a large creative playground, hiking trails and a visitor's welcome office. Future park plans in-

clude family and group camping and several addi-tional miles of hiking and biking trails.

The Land

Scandinavian immigrants settled the area 150 years ago and farmed much of the land. A community

grew and prospered around the lake for several gen-erations. As the Twin Cities grew, the deep, clean

waters of Big Marine Lake attracted new residents to the area. The unique lake and surrounding woods

and wetlands were identified for preservation over 30 years ago. The rolling hills and numerous wet-

lands in the park are part of the St. Croix ground moraine landscape type, one of eight unique land-

scape types identified for protection in the Twin Cities. Big Marine Regional Park Reserve will

eventually contain 1,920 acres and will remain 80% undeveloped. Currently 640 acres have been ac-

quired.

Natural Resources and Sustainability Proper stewardship of water, trees, animals and

other resources is of strong importance to Big Marine Park. Efforts have been made to restore

human impacts on the park's landscapes. For additional information on this subject, refer to the

Self-Guided Sustainability Tour' brochure.

than recycling at the parks! Recycling bins for both cans and bottles are available throughout the park at

trailheads, beaches, playgrounds, concession stands, restrooms, picnic shelters, and boat landings.
